Kitovu Hospital
The principal role of pharmacy department in Kitovu Hospital is to ensure availability at all times safe and cost-effective drugs and sundries for our patients.
The department is headed by a hospital pharmacist.
The department has four major units; inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, sundries store and main medicines store.
Each of the units is headed by an in-charge.
The department operates 24/7 including public holidays

The roles of pharmacy department include but not limited to the following.
- Maintaining stock levels to ensure availability at all times; minimize inventory and stock outs
- Compounding medicines for use in the hospital
- Ensuring rational use medicines
- Implementing decisions of Medicines and Therapeutics Committee (MTC).
- Helping patients to understand their medications and how to take them
- Working together with other health professionals to make appropriate drug-based decisions and training them on how to use drugs.
- Ensuring proper storage of drugs as per the guidelines and circulars issued by National Drug Authority (NDA).
- Ensuring proper disposal of pharmaceutical waste.
- Pharmacy department is the secretariate of MTC.
- The department trains next generation pharmacists and other student trainees.
- The department regularly conducts drug prescription and utilization surveys which are used by MTC and other stakeholders to provide information necessary for decision making.
- Therapeutic drug monitoring
- Ensuring good clinical pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care.
- Managing Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs)and reporting them to relevant authorities
- Ensuring adherence and compliance to prescribed medications
- Ensuring resilience and sustainability of supply chains of drugs and sundries.
